Have you heard of birth and postpartum doula here in Atlanta? Feeling a little overwhelmed about the whole birth and postpartum journey? Trust me, you’re not alone!

Doulas might just be the answer you’re looking for. These amazing people are there to support, guide, and care for you during birth and those first few weeks with your baby.

I got to chat with Atlanta birth and postpartum doula Christina Lundy from By His Grace Child Services. She’s sharing all about the postpartum experience and her tips for making the transition to life with a new baby as smooth as possible. I first met Christina a few years ago and was so impressed with what she does. I just knew my clients could benefit from her services, so I asked her to answer a few questions for you!

What is the difference between a birth and a postpartum doula?

A birth doula helps during pregnancy and labor, as well as the immediate postpartum period. They help with comfort measures, helping new parents make informed decisions, and set the atmosphere for birth. A postpartum doula focuses more on the postpartum period and “mothers the mother”. They will cook meals, do light housekeeping, aid with breastfeeding, if needed, etc.

What inspired you to become a birth and postpartum doula in Atlanta?

I wanted to be primarily home with my kids but also be able to financially contribute to our household and this seemed like a good fit. I’ve also always been passionate about birth and would often watch the birth story on TLC.

What does a typical day look like when you’re working with a family?

If I am a client’s postpartum doula a typical day looks like me checking in with mom and dad; see how they are coping emotionally with this big life shift. Then I ask what would be most helpful for me to do today, and I get right to it! Whether that’s feeding the baby, or washing dishes, or swapping laundry. Whatever needs to be done! For birth, a typical day looks like me answering emails, texts, scheduling social media posts, or chatting with clients, possibly answering any questions they may have and also making sure my doula bag is always stocked with all the supplies needed to support a mom in labor. And I just wait for THE CALL that someone is in labor, and they need my support!

Can you describe your approach to managing pain and stress during labor?

I observe quite a bit and make sure the support I’m offering is beneficial. I also may crack a joke, if I feel like it can help. Also, ask lots of questions of the providers and nurses. I try to take a collaborative approach to working with others during labor.

What are some common emotional challenges faced by new parents, and how do you help them cope?

Many new parents are surprised by the amount of work being a parent actually is! I support by helping mom and dad think of other systems they can put into place to ease the load a bit. Does that mean creating a meal train, or delegating tasks, hiring help, etc.

Do you assist with sibling adjustment when a new baby arrives?

Yes! This transition can be big for older siblings too! So, I answer any questions they may have or spend some 1 on 1 time with the older sibling to make them feel more comfortable.

How do you handle situations where a new parent is struggling with postpartum depression or anxiety?

I have an assessment I use to screen for a potential postpartum mood or anxiety disorder. If the screening comes back positive, then I will refer to the appropriate services. But, often, I find new moms just truly need some extra support and that can alleviate any symptoms.

Are you trained to recognize signs of postpartum mood disorders and recommend appropriate support?

Yes, I have training through Postpartum Support International

What is your availability and what is the process for hiring you as a doula?

More recently,  I book up pretty quickly, so I would encourage prospective clients to reach out via my website as soon as they think they would like a doula. But if I am booked, I have amazing girls on my team who can also support them! It’s a good idea for a mama to fill out the contact form on the website and schedule a consultation Byhisgracechildbirthservices.com
