I invited Ashley to write about how to prepare for your newborn photoshoot and loved what she had to share. I have photographed both of her children here in Atlanta and as a mother and a creative, she has many wonderful tips to share. You can find the original blog here

The newborn stage passes so quickly, and before you know it, your little one will be a toddler running around, causing chaos. Capturing photos of their tiny toes, adorable faces, and petal-like pouts is truly a fleeting moment and something you will treasure for a lifetime.
We were thrilled to work with Atlanta’s premier newborn photographer Mariela Duval for our son River’s newborn photos. She had previously taken our daughter’s photos, and we absolutely loved how they came out. I’m so excited to share River and Winter’s pictures with you today! I hope you enjoy them too!
Mariela’s craft is timeless, unique, and beautiful. To prepare for River’s newborn photos, I looked to Pinterest and Instagram for inspiration and sent Mariela the poses I wanted to replicate. Don’t worry if you feel overwhelmed and have difficulty finding inspiration. An excellent and creative professional such as Mariela Duval will work with you to make a moment in time absolutely beautiful. She worked her magic to recreate my ideas and added her artistic touch. The result was exactly what my husband and I had hoped for.
Since this is my second newborn photoshoot, I thought I would share the tips and tricks I’ve learned to make sure you and your baby have a great session.
So…. let’s get started!
SCHEDULE YOUR SESSION AHEAD OF TIME
The best time to photograph your newborn baby falls within 7-14 days after birth. Babies are in that sleepy newborn stage, making it easier to pose them in those adorable positions. Setting the date around the 32-week mark in your pregnancy gives you time to plan your outfits, gather props you may want to bring, and purchase any additional items needed.
COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER
Let your photographer know your style, colors you like, and props you may want to incorporate. Sending inspiration photos is the easiest way to let the photographer know exactly what you want
PACK YOUR BAGS
What to pack:
• Diaper Bag
• Loose baby clothes that zip or button
• Your Outfits for Family Portraits
• Entertainment (Ipad, books, snacks) for siblings
• Special Props
• Anything bottle or nursing related
• Pacifiers
• Blankets
KEEP YOUR BABY AWAKE BEFORE THE SESSION
I know this is easier said than done, but keeping your little one awake for one hour before your session will ensure a peaceful, sleepy baby. Pro tip: A warm bath always does the trick.
FEED YOUR BABY 30 MINUTES BEFORE YOUR SESSION
A full baby is a happy baby, and a happy baby makes for amazing photos! Feeding your newborn 30 minutes before the shoot helps prolong their sleep. Be prepared to feed them throughout the session, as newborns are on their own schedule. Having a pacifier also helps to soothe.
DRESS FOR SUCCESS
Dress your baby in loose-fitting button/zipper pajamas. These are easier to take off rather than something that goes over their head which can disturb a sleeping baby.
I will forever be thankful to our wonderful photographer, Mariela Duval, and these beautiful photos. Life with a newborn can feel long and hard at times, but they grow so quickly. I know I will look back at these and wish I could return to this stage!
If you would like to work with Mariela, you can contact her 678-362-3681 or email info@marieladuvalphotography.com to schedule your newborn or family photography session. Tell her I said hi!
