5 Stages of Pregnancy from an Atlanta Maternity Photographer

Did you know there are 5 stages of pregnancy, not just the typical three trimesters? From conception to the often-overlooked fourth trimester, each stage comes with its own challenges and joys.

Today, we’ll walk through what to expect in each stage—plus share some helpful Atlanta resources to support you through pregnancy, birth, and newborn life.

First Trimester: The Secret Life of Pregnancy

The first trimester is like a secret club where only you and your growing baby are members. During these first 12 weeks, your body is working overtime to create a new life, and you might be feeling the effects (hello, morning sickness). It’s like you’re part of an exclusive group that only fellow expectant moms can truly understand. I remember when I was in this stage, I would sneak off to the bathroom at work to deal with morning sickness, all while trying to keep my pregnancy a secret from my coworkers. And yes, Tums was my best friend, and would help me settle my stomach.

Consider booking a consultation with a prenatal nutritionist, such as those at Atlanta Women’s Specialists. They can tailor dietary recommendations to ease nausea. Or visit an acupuncture center that specializes in prenatal care and can help alleviate morning sickness through acupuncture.

Second Trimester: The Golden Age

For many moms-to-be, the second trimester is when things start feeling good. The nausea fades, your baby bump starts showing, and you finally have energy to enjoy this journey.

With the nausea subsiding and the baby bump showing, it’s time to embrace the experience. It’s a great time to focus on preparing for your baby’s arrival while taking care of yourself.

Baby Essentials

  • Check out local baby boutiques like Baby Braithwaite in Buckhead or Cradle and Kids for nursery items and baby gear.
  • Parenting Classes
  • Maternity Wear Shopping
    • Browse maternity-friendly clothing stores like Seraphine Maternity for stylish and comfortable options.
  • The second trimester is a perfect time for maternity photos. Look for a photographer specializing in Atlanta maternity sessions to capture this joyful phase.

Third Trimester: The Home Stretch

The third trimester is when things start to get real. As you prepare for your baby’s arrival, you’ll want to make sure you have everything in place for a smooth transition.

When it comes to the nursery, some of my clients go all out and are prepared months in advance, and some have 6-month-olds without a nursery. Most importantly, focus on essentials like:

  • A crib or bassinet.
  • Diapers and wipes.
  • A changing station.
  • Soft lighting for nighttime.

For stylish baby gear, check out Baby Braithwaite in Atlanta.

Consider joining a local birthing class or hiring a doula to feel more prepared and confident.

Involving your family can make the transition smoother. With your partner, divide tasks, take a parenting class together, or plan a small getaway to connect before baby arrives. If you have older kids, let them join in by helping set up the nursery, reading sibling books, or enjoying special one-on-one time with you to reinforce their importance in the growing family.

If you have not hired a newborn photographer, make sure you add this to your list. Contact me for information on our newborn photo sessions.

Birth:

The Main Event

The moment you’ve been waiting for is finally here: birth! Whether your plan includes a hospital delivery, birth center, or home birth, trust in your preparation and the support of your care team. Remember, every birth story is unique, and the most important thing is that you and your baby are safe and healthy. Soon, you’ll hold your little one in your arms and begin this incredible new chapter of life together.
